Sceletium tortosum, or also better known as Kanna, was used as a luxury food by South African and Namibian peoples. It was drunk as tea, smoked or snorted *. Dutch people who later arrived in South Africa called it “kauwgoed” (kau-gut). According to the African peoples, it is said to have an invigorating and stimulating effect on body and mind.
